Saying Goodbye to the Standard

Often the smallest spaces in your house and ones that are used to maximum capacity.  Do you know which room we’re talking about?

That’s right – a bathroom!  It’s Makeover Monday and today we head to Houston, Texas to see what Sophia Vassiliou did to this standard space.

This Texas native and formally trained fine artist was tasked with overhauling a smaller than standard bathroom, inclusive of those lovely corner showers that you get to squeeze yourself into!

Their wishlist included better and prettier lighting, that always desired spa like feel and wait for it – a bathub!!  Space planning, always paramount, would be put to the test to meet those objectives indeed.

 

The Desired Bath Tub

Moving the toilet was the next step one to gaining space (and that bath tub!); a straight forward plumbing reconfiguration to the side wall and it wouldn’t protrude into the room as far.  Two other minor change did wonders; look at both the wall color and window covering above.  The darker beige walls closed in the space and a lighter yet creamy shade definitely enlarges the space.  As does the new roller shade window covering.  Tip: while California type shutters are great for big spaces they block out a lot of light with their frame and in a space that’s small to begin you want as much natural light as possible.

4 weeks later and a complete layout flip flop that saw the vanity on the other side of the room and totally remade, a toilet turned and the corner shower long forgotten about, only to be replaced by a full size tub, the results are fresh, crisp and stunning.  With the window shade open and all the lights on, including these perfect Hubbardton Forge sconces, a happy client would absolutely ensue.

Sophia’s favorite piece in the space is the Duravit Vessel Sink.  It’s glossy glaze adds some sparkle to the space indeed but we’ll also add it keeps the water contained to the basin rather than all over the rest of the counter; how can you not love that?!

Interestingly enough the feature that everyone involved with was so pleased with was down below all the gorgeousness above!  Check out these La Nova 48″ square floor ceramic tiles.  Done in a tone on tone really non descript pattern you have to look really closely to even realize there are tiles.  The uniformity of the tiles helped make the room feel much more continuous and therefore spacious.  As the saying goes floors ground a space and this one lets the rest of the room shine indeed!
