The architecture studio Abaton, has renewed a ruin located in Extremadura, Spain and transformed it into a clean and open interior with views to an incredible landscape.

Located in a privileged environment of the province of Caceres (in yellow below).

The goal of the transformation was to take an abandoned barn and make it a home without intervening in the territory.  Recognizing the pre-existence of the wise position of man towards nature, doing a comprehensive reno in a coherent and respectful rehabilitation manner was certainly a challenge.

A heavy dose of vision was needed to transform this space

The owner wanted to respect the harmony of the environment and the essence of the local architecture, but he also wanted to create new spaces that would cater to their needs while taking advantage of the landscape.

They kept the original structure of the stone, but used materials including concrete, wood nd steel to breathe new life into the building.

The Main Living Space – After

Inside, the house is very funcional and modern. The main room is open and airy with very high ceilings which allows for maximum light.   BATAVIA, who furnished it, also used minimalist decor with scandinavian touches that adds an even cleaner style and sophistication to the space.  Isn’t it gorgeous?!

The Dining Area – After

The soothe neutral palette with iconic chairs in the dining area is further elevated with this fabulous swinging wall/door to let in extra light and air on a great day.

The grey of the concrete and the slate floors ground the space while the white walls and neutral palette breath life into it. Between the north and south ends of the house there is a yard which is key for ventilation.  While anyone in North America would appreciate the work that went into creating that stone retaining wall, the designers went above and beyond in this yard and installed a fabulous water feature that creates a moment when looking out.

The Yard With Water Feature

The bedrooms are all very functional yet beautiful too.  While the rooms are small they tucked in typical European storage options with a wall of closets and kept the decor to a minimum by selecting a few great pieces.  When the wall opens to the exterior however and the view takes over it might just be the best place in the house to enjoy your morning latte!

Studio Abaton is an extraordinary transformation that respected the environment and the essence of such a place.  Mixing old and new throughout consistently and modernizing a heritage-like structure is no easy feat and all involved did a fantastic job.  I really like this house a lot, and certainly wouldn’t mind living here!  What do you think?
