Being furniture obsessed we are always asking people who they know with cool places.  Our intro to Cheryl Gushue, award winning North American makeup artist, global educator and beauty expert, did not disappoint!   Based in Toronto, Canada she calls the Broadview Lofts home.

Built in 1914, it was formerly the warehouse of Rexall pharmacy and drug distribution company.  In 2003, the Sorbara Group converted it to 152 loft style condominiums. The conversion added two extra levels, set back from the rest of the building and composed mostly of glass to minimize its impact. A similar addition was added at ground level along the eastern side of the building. The redesign conserved many historic elements of the building, such as the cage elevators and a water tower on top of the roof. The original warehouse floors were also preserved, giving each unit 12 foot ceilings.

How long have you lived here?  I’ve lived at the Broadview Lofts for five and a half years. I used to own at Candy Factory and Chocolate lofts on the Westside for 15 years,” says Cheryl.  When I sold my last place I decided I would rent to give myself a little freedom. I began the search for another loft that would fit my 10ft shelf and my king size bed which was not easy to find. My reaction when I first saw this place was “Darn, I’m moving to the Eastside”.   I had been a Westside dweller for so long that I was very hesitant about this side of town. Now I’ve watched Queen East grow into one of the most sought after neighborhoods to live in.

How would you describe your place?  My place is my urban beach house mixed with modern mid century and lots of art books.

Did it look like this 30 days post move in or is your home more of a work-in-progress collection?  It’s been a gradual work in progress. I really wanted a sectional and it took some time to find one that I liked within my budget and had to order it from overseas. I would say by the first 6 months I had it pretty much set up. I have always bought and sold vintage furniture and brought over a few of my favorites. Being in a neighborhood with vintage stores I would end up going out to buy a sandwich and coming back with a 60’s butterfly chair.   I have several new Eastside purchases since I’ve been here.

What are your favorite pieces?  My 10ft Mooi bookshelf. I love how the books display forward which give color and inspiration to the all white walls and shelf.

I love my Russel Spanner 1950’s dining table that I had car booth sprayed matte white. The shape is so modern and looks great with my black Bertoia wire chairs.

I brought my amazing 6ft chunky dark wood framed mirror by Commute from my last place. I will have that for life.

What has changed about your look/style over the years? Over the years my style has changed. When I was at the Chocolate Lofts I was really into aluminum and steel 1950’s mixed with teak mid century modern. I used to frequent Queen West Antiques buying some of my favorite pieces like my heavy duty Steelcase 50’s desk, massive aluminum operation style pendants and teak pieces like a coffee table or my bed end tables. My shift to what I call “mad scientist industrial” happened at the tail end of living there. I used to visit Commute when it was on Queen West all the time for inspiration.

I branched out into restaurant design with Brad Moore at School Bakery & Café in Liberty Village. We had lots of fun coming up with the concept and vintage shopping for all the details.

We worked with textile and lighting designers to create custom décor with a school nostalgia theme. The ideas were endless with lots of online research to create the entire brand.

What are your 3 favorite furniture brands?  My favorite furniture brand is Commute. I love how Hamid creates one of a kind reclaimed pieces that have an heirloom feel. They are lifetime, classic, substantial pieces.  I really appreciate Kelly Wearstler’s eclectic modern granny chic style too. She creates such an unexpected mix of functional art furniture mixed with serious pops of color with a 60s feel.   Marten Baas has always impressed me with his use of materials. Who else would think of setting a chair on fire then finishing it afterwards? Or a giant bookshelf that looks and feels like it’s made out of Styrofoam!

Whats your next project?  I see myself moving to more of a raw loft again by the end of the summer. Since I’m a fashion designer and makeup artist I am looking to have the ideal live/work studio that incorporates what I do into my living space. I love being surrounded by my creativity and inspiration.

We can’t WAIT to see what she does with it!
