When Crystal Reeves of Houston (TX) CLR Design first saw her clients’ office all she could think about was how she could make it sing!
You’ve seen this before right? Top of the stairs, this blank landing type space that could accommodate function but the million dollar question – how?
Lets give credit to this homeowner for actually doing something useful with the space in the first place for starters; its even got drapery (and art!)
Open railings on both sides, built in bookcase on one end and window on the other, there’s obviously a lack of storage – and paper everywhere thanks to a doctorate studies degree!
With a mandate of “Girlish Glamour” the client had 2 requirements – a comfortable desk and lounge chair. The key to higher education = loving where you will spend hours on end!
Crystals first pick: the chandelier .. the epitome of glam indeed! By removing the old school potlight and installing an actual fixture the light would bounce around the room, especially with the natural light from not only the window but the open aired spaces to either side of this nook.
Being inspired makes everything better, school included! Looking outdoors usually helps and building in a desk maximizes the floor space. We love the tone on wall tone desk paired with the colorful desk chair for a pop of color.
Take notice that the railing to the right, or stair side has also been updated from its wood toned past. While not as fancy as the one on the left the style and palette correspond helping to unify the space. And behind the desk …
A genius addition of MORE storage in the form of shelving flanks the original built-in shelving spot but that too has been entirely made over!
The renovation took longer than the 3 month scheduled build out for a myriad of reasons, two of which were
- It took forever to find the antiqued mirror insert for the cabinetry. They had to be just right, that perfect touch of glam; in the end they are Crystals favorite piece in the space.
- The wall covering selection for the backsplash of the now antique-mirrored cabinets. While it looks painted its wallpaper. Their initial pick was pricy but a go until they found out there was was a 10 yard minimum. Given the space only required 2 yards of wallpaper, it was not only a silly spend but who wants excess lying around? They found a beautiful sparkly substitute that didn’t result in an overage or breaking the bank account #winner
Can we check out a close up of this hardware? It’s all in the detail – always! Between the mirror, the cabinet detail and this hardware its a glam home room.
And just out in front, mid-room, that chair the client so desired to curl up in a read her doctoral books with the cutest wood side table – another hint of metallic whimsy. With the help of Innovations, Anthropologie, Duralee, Elizabeth Cole Design and Alexandra’s Draperies this space is incredible indeed!
