It was hard to miss chatter about the movie ‘The Intern‘ last week. From the Writer/Director of other movies we adore (It’s Complicated, the Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give), the flick based around an online fashion website run by a young, career-driven woman (Anne Hathaway) hiring an intern sounds familiar, until a retired successful business owner and widower (Robert DeNiro) lands this senior (?) position. We’ll be tuning in to learn what on earth a senior internship is for starters …watch the trailer here.
So startup, chic, NYC err Brooklyn aka hipster central. No stereotypes here whatsoever. While we’re first in line for any sappy rom-com we’re particularly intrigued to see how the thirty-something, seventy-something relationship plays out (cause we live this every day with les parents!) Plot aside, our favorite thing about filmmaker Nancy Meyers movies are the pretty sets. Recall the ah-mazing kitchen in Something’s Gotta Give or that darling english cottage that Cameron Diaz danced around with her new beau and his daughters in the Holiday.
So we were reading a debrief from set designer Kristi Zea on how the set of the intern came to life over at Traditional Home and love that modern techniques were deployed; go figure Nancy used Pinterest to show her style to the production design crew.
“I used Pinterest to show Kristi and Susan ideas I had seen and been inspired by,” Meyers says. “This was incredibly helpful in getting them up to speed on all of the research I had done on what was going on inside all those remodels in Brooklyn as well as in the start-up world. We projected the Pinterest images on a big screen for our meetings and then we’d all discuss which ideas would work for us.”
Between the startup’s cool Red Hook office (above) or the Park Slope brownstone Hathaway calls Home (scroll down), the set decor that results is nothing short of drool worthy (this is the movies after all).
We would just like to point out that any reference that this set up as “typical” for a an online company or startup or whatever you want to chalk it up it is absurd however.
We immediately think burn baby burn! And no we’re not thinking of the song rather referring to the cost of living in these perfect, well-appointed spaces on the bottom line!
While we admire that they tried to keep it “on par with what startups and their founders would spend on work and home”, a trip to OKL, Gilt and Mode Operandi (which are the farthest thing from startup) seems logical no?!
While we’re certain life chez le Unicorns (a term reserved for the super successful once-were-a-startup but got HEAVILY funded and haven’t blown up- yet!) no doubt looks as beautiful, organized and well put together it’s beyond far fetched for anyone to think this is how your typical online co. or startup founder lives daily let alone could afford to.
Case in point: the $18k Lindsey Adelman dining light is total score for the real world no?! We wish!
While were certain we’ll still end up with a good dose of heart for the rom-com and our Anne-fan of a husband will be along for his the ride rolling his eyes every step of the way, we can’t decide if typical stereotypes about our daily lives are going to leave us in a fit of rage post watching or not.
