Plagued by a winter that was short yet packed a punch, we can’t seem to ditch winter in the Northeast. Finding ourselves caught between whether we want to snuggle up or enjoy the outdoors, we found the perfect Travel Tuesday pick to sum up our current sentiments: cabin in the middle of nowhere, with all the boutique elements and let the cards fall where they will!
Nestled between Norway’s highest mountain range and the Heggefjord, we land near the village of Heggenes. 110 miles North of Oslo and due west of Lillehammer (you know the ’94 olympic site), i.e. the middle of nowhere and if it’s still winter in the North East it probably looks somewhat like this right now…
Fallen in love yet? Enter into the definitely not traditional lobby — and stay for a long while.
Surrounded by woods and water is this cool fairytale-like timber clad boutique estate named Herangtunet (which translates to farm garden). Packed full of cultural heritage this year-round destination is the perfect spot to launch yourself into the wilderness around and do what you want. Whether that falls under creative, escapist or social with all your family or friends, its a perfect for the indecisive in us all.
Purchased in 2003 by its current owners, Marco and Marie-José, what started as a guest house has quickly transitioned into boutique hotel. The minute we heard the words ‘graphic’ and ‘interior’ design background we knew we were in for a treat; alas picture a day hiking, biking, skiing or even just eating (mmm….culinary tour!), then crawling into one of these heavenly rooms.
Edgy yet traditional each room boasts a different theme: Aspen, Rome, London, New York, Norway, France, Dutch, Iceland and Sweden.
We, of course, would be booking 2 nights in one room, followed by 2 in another and 2 more in yet another room much to the chagrin of our other half (though by now he’s accustomed to our pack and move around style). I mean how you one choose?!
With capacity maxing out at 28, we’re sure the guests wouldn’t mind the RS room swap schedule either! Then again, we could spend the whole weekend in this bath area … just look at that tree bowl of a sink and the traditional scandinavian tub … seriously!
Any way we cut this visit, we won’t be disappointed – unless air boarding doesn’t quite go our way (recall highest Norwegian mountain then factor in head first and high speeds). Reminder: no lunch cocktailing!
Located in one of Norway’s sunniest regions, close to a major lake, a ski resort (Beitostolen) and that Jotunheimen National Park it would be a challenge to cover their laundry list of activities in a week span.
Who doesn’t love a travel pick where there’s something for everyone … even the bookworm. Now the million dollar question is — do we go in ….
Winter?
Or Summer?
