Hey Y’all.  Kelly Here.

If you follow us on instagram you might have seen the infamous Annie Sloan paint session I did last week.

I think I’m a pretty creative person and I’m really good at the design-build part but when it comes to painting, well, that’s a whole other department!   The only thing I’ve painted to date are walls last summer at the cottage, and under major supervision of my pro-painter of a husband.  Thankfully I passed, but rest assured there’s no shortage of room to improve and every time we turn on the bathroom light I hear about it lol!

What’s become a really bad (but ah-mazing) habit in my life is vintage trolling for “nothing in particular” but getting sucked in by the potential, and of course, the deal I could bargain or barter my way into.  Needless to say I’m stockpiling gems but have absolutely room for them to live post restoration anyhow so the fact their being stockpiled really isn’t the end of the world.  What exactly I’m going to do with them, however, is.  Naturally, the dresser (above top) requires less know-how as recovering seats and cushions is a whole other game so first stop: paint.

When the opportunity to learn how to paint furniture came around off I went – terrified of how bad I might discover I would be (the face says it all no?!)

Apparently this was all I’d need …

Funny how of 4 colours, the teal ended up next to me (slightly obsessed).  What happened next was hilarious for the non painter in me.  Painter extrodinaire Annie says “grab your candlestick, some paint, a brush and paint it.”  I mean, what?!  Surely it can’t be that easy …

Here I thought that there would be some right way to do it, you know like get to much paint on your brush and glob or god forbid DAB (the words don’t dab seem to be permanently engrained in my head c/o the hubbie lol), but no … just do it. I’m pretty impressed with myself and calming the heck down thinking I got this – until she brings out these

Yeah that’s right – that’s the paint meets fabric (in a bathtub) scenario and it’s been washed a bunch of times to boot.  Painted above; stenciled below.  Both are super crazy to me – like I had no idea this was possible and my wheels are turning …would it be easier to paint the chair seat over recovering?!  Jury is out.

As my first painting class would go don’t we just bust out a white cloth tea towel and get busy.  Recall they had other colors of paint so here was my chance to really test the product, and my fear; mix and match.  I call Annie over and ask exactly I’m going to do that, like where’s the water to wash or can I get another brush, to which she responds that’s not needed.  Turns out this is part of the fun, how you get new tones, and the paint is made to do be effortless.

Music to my ears … lets do this.  I had NO clue what the hell I was doing!   There were 2 stencils in front of me hands and flowers as well as the orange and grey paints.  Frankly am NOT an orange person whatsoever but pushed my boundaries to at least try it and thought keep it simple and repeat pattern.  I also wanted to try both freehand and stencil. That was all well and good until …

A nice lady complimented me on being the only person in the room who did a diagonal stripe.  Sweet but I knew that meant interesting in every sense of the form.  I mean check the teal hand with the tips in the middle that got cut off because I clearly forgot that once the tape I’d used for the lines was gone it wouldn’t be joined!  That being said I got my paint on, had an absolute blast and most importantly said audios to the furniture paint jitters and hello to my new fav thing!  No really, I CAN’T get over how awesome this paint is mostly because its going to make me look so talented but more so because it’s so bloody easy to do set up without sanding, priming, prep, etc and cleaning is a snap!  Annie Sloan Toronto Paint

Oh there’s another diagonal (maybe said nice lady was actually serious?!)

Loved these two as well.

Check back later in April to see about that dresser.  In the interim thought you’d like to see what the other far more talented ladies in the room did with their napkins.
