Its November and while the weather in the northeast feels remarkably like spring you just know its going to turn soon …and when the bones get chilled what’s better than a hot shower?!  This makeover Monday we head to Illinois to meet Bonnie Gonsior of On Cloud Design and see her fun 1920’s style bathroom update.

A quick peek at what she walked into

Illinois Bathroom Before

You’ve all seen this before right?!  Chalked full of builder grade material and fixtures, its the most standard bathroom around so easy to see why Bonnie was so excited about the potential, not to mention the ease of working with a guy.

Thankfully he didn’t want glam so they stuck to a masculine industrial palette at his request.  He was also adamant about getting rid of the existing vanity and brutally harsh lighting! After finalizing the design concept it was logical to start with the double washstand as it was the largest piece in the room.  What resulted 15 design hours and 2 months later was stunning.

Classic white subway tile and crisp grey walls anchor the room and give it that desired masculine feel but keep it bright and fresh, a key detail in smaller spaces.

An eye-catching mix of white marble and metal in the double washstand tips its hat to the 20s and the wooden frame of the medicine cabinets really define the space and give this bathroom both warmth and contrast.  We also love that the woven baskets below the counter bring balance and functionality (we can only assume extra linens and toilet paper!)

As per all design projects things change on the fly when problems arise.  In this case it became obvious mid-project that despite the light palette, it was still too dark as there wasn’t a direct window to let in natural light. Bonnie quickly added the can lighting above the mirrors on a separate light switch.

With the help of Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Rejuvenation and Kohler, not to mention that white honeycomb floor (wins us over every time!), this gent certainly took it up a few thousand notches.  A timeless space that he won’t tire of for years to come.
